Midcentury Modern inspired design for a cabinet that holds two laundry hampers. This is for an apartment where space is a premium. So, if you have to have a laundry hamper in sight, might as well make it look decent.
Mortise & Tennon Base
The base is set with a 10% slant and joined with mortise and tennons. The cabinet is attached to the base with a few scews.
Stop Dado Sides
To bring the sides flush with the front, I used a stop dado. This came to about an inch from the front and all the way through the back.
Still in the shop and unstained.
Side shelves
My daughter decided to add shelves to the wall next to the cabinet. These will look like they incorproate into the cabinet, but stand independent from the cabinet.
The shelve are half lap dado jointed. At about 7 feet high, there are four shelves including the top shelf.
Jig for handles
To add the handles, I created a jig to center the holes for both doors.
The jig is as wide as the doors, with the guide holes pre-drilled. A one-time use jig that ensures the handles are properly aligned.
Finished Midcentury Modern Cabinet
There is some decorating in store, but the cabinet looks good, and the shelves are coming in handy.
